NOTICE: PARENTS/GUARDIANS OF ALL CLASSES
This is to inform all guardians of the issues discussed and agreed upon at the TCS Coordination Committee meeting yesterday, attended by member-guardians, Principal and Coordinators.
The issues discussed and agreed upon are:
1) CANCELLATION OF CAIE MAY-JUNE BOARD EXAMINATIONS:
Due to the substantial increase of Covid cases in India, CAIE, UK has cancelled May-June Examinations and moved to school-assessed grades. The school will begin the exercise to award school-assessed grades to students, mostly from Classes X & XI (AS Levels) who were registered for this exam. Alternatively, students registered for exams can be withdrawn at the discretion of guardians with full credit for fees paid for May-June 2021 exams.
This will not affect our earlier class of Class XII students, most of whom took the Board examinations in March.
2) EARLY RESUMPTION OF ONLINE CLASSES FOR XI & XII (AS & A2 Levels):
Normally, the academic session begins in April. This time, students of our school who were to take Board exams started in February which continued for five weeks. Therefore no teaching time has been lost for which teaching need not be resumed now, in the wake of cancellation of Board Exams.
Moreover classes cannot be resumed since teachers are now teaching newly admitted students from other schools to bring them up to the level of our own students, and also because some of our students will be withdrawing from the board exams and some will have to be assessed for grades which teachers will be undertaking during the next one and half months. Therefore Classes XI & XII (AS & A2 Levels) will resume on 14 June 2021 along with all other classes.
3) RESUMING IN-PERSON SCHOOL:
Guardians and teachers have a higher level of fear this time, because children are getting affected. Even a hybrid model does not seem possible for the near future, as it is not safe for anyone to go to school.
In view of the possibility of multiple waves, a guardian said, and the committee agreed, that safety is paramount both for students and teachers now.
4) ONLINE CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES:
The school has been contemplating online Co Curricular Activities, which however have the disadvantage of increasing on-screen time for already stressed students.
Guardians were of the opinion that such classes should be limited to one or two classes per week, and rather than activities like coding and chess which cannot be satisfactorily done entirely online, book-reading, speech & debate should be introduced.
5) SUPPORT AND APPRECIATION FOR SCHOOL AND TEACHERS:
Guardians extended their support to the school for what it has been doing since the Pandemic first stuck and teachers too were appreciated for their efforts. The cooperation and understanding of parents were also appreciated by the school representatives.
We all have to do our best for the children.

Dear Parent/Guardian
This is to inform you that a TCS Coordination Committee has been recently formed with guardians from all four sections of the school – Junior School, Middle School, O Levels and A Levels – as well as the Principal and the Coordinators of the school to meet and discuss several issues, including the extraordinary one of resuming in-person classes during the next academic year.
The Committee met virtually for the first time on Tuesday, 2nd March. A report on the deliberations of the committee is given below for the information of all guardians.
PRESENT:
Guardians: Dr. Arnab Chattopadhyay, Dr. Tamal Kanti Ghosh, Dr. Michelle Harrison, Ms Priyanka Bhaduri, Dr. Keya Mukhopadhyay, Ms Yuvika Iyer, Mrs. Susmita Sarkar, and Ms Ranjana Chakraborty.
Teachers: Mrs. Sunita Chowdhary, Mrs. Jasmine Sahani, Mrs. Sampa Dhar and Ms Smeeta Basu.
DISCUSSION:
The following issues were discussed:
1) RESUMING IN-PERSON CLASSES: Parents feel it is advisable to move very cautiously and start classes after summer vacations. It is impractical to resume classes in April, considering that a second wave of Covid may be imminent, from the pattern of earlier epidemics, and also that numbers of Covid-affflicted people seem to be increasing.
2) TEACHERS: In view of the recent incident of Karnataka, where many children and teachers were infected with the virus after schools reopened, vaccination of the teachers was discussed. This has already started in West Bengal on priority basis and should give our teachers necessary protection. However, it was also pointed out that even if teachers get vaccinated, scientific information/immunity data is still not known, as the virus is prone to change very quickly.
3) HYBRID MODEL OF TEACHING /LEARNING: It was suggested and agreed that when in-person classes resume, a hybrid model would be followed, at least for some time. A hybrid model means a combination of in-person and online classes. Several suggestions were made, such as Tests/ Grading to continue online so that teachers do not have to handle paper physically, and such hybrid classes being conducted for alternate groups on alternate days. The school will decide on these aspects closer to the time when in-person classes resume. A parent suggested reducing the syllabi of junior classes a bit as wi-fi connections create problems at times.
4) SOCIAL CONCERNS FOR CHILDREN: Guardians and teachers agreed that Covid has taken a heavy toll on socialization as Social Distancing is difficult for children and yet they have their emotional needs to interact with each other. After-examination online activities should help.
5) PRECAUTIONS: Fumigation, Social distancing, Consent forms from parents before resuming in-person classes were suggested. Guardians were informed that as the Board Examinations for A2 Level students are being held now, the school is already following Covid protocols, like school sanitization every day before and after each examination, compulsory mask-wearing, temperature checks at the gate, sanitization of hands, open doors and windows with no air-conditioning to prevent spread of virus. In response to guardian concerns, it was assured that children would be sent back home from school in case any symptom was evident, and also that there would be regular cleaning and sanitizing of toilets.
6) LENIENCY TOWARDS LEAVES: An individual carrying the virus is most infectious around the time of onset of the symptoms which are usually very mild. Children or teachers with such mild initial symptoms and at the most infectious stage of the disease may consider ignoring their slight physical discomforts and come to school to meet some important deadlines. Unwittingly, they would be spreading the infection to others. The school should encourage such individuals to abstain from attending and assure that they would not be penalized for absences, so that he/she does not infect others. It must be notified to all parents that children with even mild symptoms must not come to school. Also, parents need to be reassured that leaves will not lead to any kind of penalties for their wards.
7) ECONOMY MEASURES: The school will have to adopt some economy measures, because it has been severely affected, like many guardians, by the pandemic. Some are being explored such as doing away with the pre-pandemic practise of issuing exercise books which do not represent a major outlay for guardians but a substantial amount for the school.
However, such measures as not running air-conditioners till such time that Covid is a threat, and issuing e-books or copied books are not economy measures. Many books could not be sourced last year for which e-books and copied books had to be issued. It is also the case this year, but on a much lower scale as most books could be located, and have already been ordered.
8) THOUGHTS ON ONLINE CLASSES: Guardians said that all teachers are working very hard with online classes and they congratulated teachers on that count. Teachers expressed gratitude to parents and also thanked those present in the meeting for their suggestions and concerns for teachers’ well-being.

NOTICE: GUARDIANS OF CLASSES IX – XII
Although the State Government has permitted classes for students of Classes IX-XII to be held in school from 12th February, we do not plan to do so as of today in keeping with the opinions expressed by a majority of guardians. The reasons are as follows:
Class XII: The board exams of Class XII begin from Monday, 8th February which students will take in school.
Classes X & XI: Classes X & XI have already taken their final examinations. Their board exams have been scheduled in May-June in which they have been exempted from taking practical examinations. Therefore there is no urgent reason for which they need to attend in-person classes now. We plan to continue with their online lessons, and resume in-person classes for them from 5th April 2021, when school reopens after Spring Break.
Class IX: The academic year for Class IX students is almost over now. Students are preparing for taking online final examinations that will begin from 17th February. We do not see any benefit in having them take classes in school for just one week before exams, and therefore plan for them to resume in-person classes in the new academic year beginning from 5th April 2021.
We will keep you updated if there is any material change.
Please check https://thecambridgeschool.ac.in/academics/calendar & https://thecambridgeschool.ac.in/school/announcement/ from time to time to keep yourself abreast of any changes.

NOTICE: PARENTS/GUARDIANS OF CLASS X
You are aware that the academic schedule of the school runs from April to March with IGCSE Board exams taken by students of Class X in February-March.
Normally, Class X students would have taken the IGCSE board exams in March 2021. However, due to the pandemic it is not clear whether it will be safe for candidates to take the exams in March 2021. It is especially not clear about what would happen to examinations if any student, invigilator or staff member contracts COVID and comes in contact with others during the examinations.
Furthermore, Cambridge Assessments International Education (CAIE), UK, have not yet offered any special relief to candidates who register for these exams but are not able to take it for COVID related reasons, as they had for June 2020 and November 2020 board exams. Therefore, guardians might well be faced with significant financial loss if they enrol their wards for March 2021 examinations who are then unable to take the examinations.
In view of these significant risks, the school has deferred the IGCSE board examinations of Class X students from March 2021 to June 2021, when we expect the situation to have eased.
There will be no academic loss for any student of Class X as teachers will complete the IGCSE syllabus well in time and students will be moved to AS Levels on the basis of the Annual School Examinations which will very likely be held online. They will start studying AS Level subjects of their choice from February 2021 and take the IGCSE Board examinations in June 2021.
The decision to defer the March 2021 exams to June 2021 exams has therefore been taken, as explained above, keeping the safety and security of students uppermost in our minds without any academic loss for them.
NOTICE: PARENTS/GUARDIANS OF AS LEVEL STUDENTS
You are aware that the academic schedule of the school runs from April to March with AS Level Board exams taken by most students in February-March.
Normally, AS Level students would have taken the board exams in March 2021. However, due to the pandemic it is not clear whether it will be safe for candidates to take the exams in March 2021. It is especially not clear about what would happen to examinations if any student, invigilator or staff member contracts COVID and comes in contact with others during the examinations.
Also, students studying Science subjects at AS Levels will be at a significant disadvantage in taking the March 2021 examinations, as they have not been able to attend any Practical/Laboratory classes this academic year due to the pandemic. There is a greater chance of them being able to attend Practical/Laboratory classes before the June 2021 examinations, which will prepare them adequately for the Practical component of AS Level Science examinations.
In view of these significant risks, the school has deferred the AS Level board examinations from March 2021 to June 2021, when we expect the situation to have eased.
There will be no academic loss for any student as teachers will complete the AS Level syllabus well in time and students will be moved to A2 Levels on the basis of the Annual School Examinations which will very likely be held online. They will start studying subjects at A2 Levels from February 2021 and take the AS Level Board examinations in June 2021. They should also be able to take their A2 Level Board examinations in time, during Feb-March 2022, so that they do not face any delay in applying to colleges and universities.
The decision to defer the March 2021 exams to June 2021 exams has therefore been taken, as explained above, keeping the safety and security of students uppermost in our minds without any academic loss for them.
NOTICE: PARENTS/GUARDIANS OF A2 LEVEL STUDENTS
In view of the risks posed by the ongoing pandemic, the school has deferred the board exams of IGCSE (Class X) and AS Level (Class XI) students from March 2021 to June 2021.
However, deferring the exams for A2 students similarly would mean that they would face delays in applying to colleges and universities and might even lose an academic year. Also, Cambridge Assessments International Education (CAIE), UK have informed us that they will not be allowing A2 candidates to carry over their AS Level March 2020 grades to any session beyond the March 2021 board exams. The implication is that A2 students will have to retake their AS examinations if they do not appear for the A2 Level Board exams of March 2021.
Therefore, the school will hold board examinations in February-March 2021 only for interested A2 students. Candidates and guardians should however understand the risks involved which are as follows:
The school will adopt all possible safeguards including socially-distanced seating of candidates, sanitisation of classrooms after each examination and wiping of hands with alcoholic sanitizers, but candidates must take exams at their own risk.
You are now requested to consider all the information contained in this notice and let us know, by way of reply to this mail, within 8 November 2020 whether you would like to register your ward/s for the A2 Board exams due to be held in March 2021, and in such case inform us of the following:

An Appeal to Guardians
Dear Parents/Guardians
At the outset, I would like to express our sincere appreciation of the continuing support of the guardians of our students during these trying times. Without your understanding, cooperation and extraordinary efforts to cope with these new ways of learning, it would have been impossible for the School and its students to maintain the standard of education that we have so far been able to.
Further to our earlier communication on the extremely difficult financial situation that the School is facing, we would like to highlight a few points:
Our receipts from fees for this year are down by approximately 23% from last year, primarily due to non-payment of fees and significantly lower number of newly admitted students since the Covid 19 pandemic began.
Our costs that we were able to save due to the closure of the school premises – such as electricity, stationery, etc – are approximately 7% of our revenues, which has resulted in a situation where the savings in costs are far less than the reduction in revenues.
We are barely able to meet our expenses and we have had to reduce the salaries/fees payable to our teaching staff as informed to you in an earlier mail and any further reduction is bound to affect their morale and their ability to teach to the best of their abilities. Some teachers have already indicated that they would not be able to survive further cuts. If teachers leave due to further cuts, it will be very difficult to replace them during this time and with our very strained budgets. Please do read the appeal by teachers that is being sent out with this mail.
As you know, we have conducted online classes ever since the pandemic began without any loss of either teaching days or coverage of any part of any syllabus, as we had shortened the summer vacation to make up for the delay in starting classes in April. The progress of most children has been largely satisfactory and has even exceeded expectations, as communicated to us by several parents during the recently concluded PTM. I am sure that you will join me in wishing this state of affairs to continue.
As you may be aware, the Hon’ble Calcutta High Court has recently directed all private unaided schools to offer 20% concession in fees. The Hon’ble High Court has also requested parents to not avail of the concession, if possible.
We are appealing to you to voluntarily not avail of the concession as our financial situation is extremely challenging, as we have communicated to you in our previous mails. If our receipts from fees were to go down further due to the concessions for which we had not budgeted, the quality of education that we have managed to maintain during the lockdown period through online classes is almost certain to be affected. There may also be immediate adverse impacts on the school such as the reduction of both teaching staff at all levels and the number of subjects available at IGCSE (Classes 9 &10) and at A Levels (Classes 11 & 12). We might also have to stop issuing textbooks.
For all these reasons, we beseech you, for the sake of the school and the teachers which in turn affects your child/ren and their educational standards, not to press for the concessions. We realise that many of you are also living through financially challenging conditions but we still have to appeal to you in view of the desperate circumstances in which we find ourselves. If you avail of the concessions now directed by the Hon’ble High Court it will admittedly result in some savings for you, but the combined impact on the school of such actions by parents will be nothing short of devastating.
I look forward to your cooperation as always, and wish you a happy and safe festive season.
With Warm Regards,
Sunita Chowdhary
Principal
An Appeal by Teachers
Dear Guardians,
We hope and pray that all of you are safe and secure in your homes in this difficult period. We, as teachers of The Cambridge School are committed to the educational goals that we have set for ourselves.
This sense of commitment has encouraged us to fundamentally change our way of working and embrace new technologies to make sure that the learning process does not come to a standstill during the pandemic. Be it from learning to use the latest digital tools within a very short span of time to neglecting health issues that come with conducting regular online classes such as eye strain/ headaches/ throat problems, we have defeated all these challenges just to ensure that the education of our students is not negatively impacted in any way.
We are trying our level best to help students grasp concepts by conducting frequent revision classes, setting regular assignments and class tests to strengthen their conceptual bases. Even if the students send their doubts after class hours, we make it a point to clarify them at the earliest since students’ satisfaction has always been our top priority.
To keep students prepared for Board exams, we have left no stones unturned by conducting the half yearly exams for Classes 9 – 12 on time, and generating online report cards which you will get shortly.
In these times that have been very stressful for us as teachers, both professionally and in our personal lives, it gives us immense pleasure to see that our students have quickly adapted to the new way of learning. It is extremely heart-warming and encourages us to move forward.
Needless to say, this period is extremely distressing for humanity as a whole. But as teachers, it always has been our goal to shield our students from the negative effects and encourage them in the pursuit of excellence regardless of the circumstances. Our consistent efforts are directed to motivate our students to think, learn and persevere.
We empathise with those of you who must be experiencing financial problems. But we also have families of our own and have financial responsibilities and commitments. Some of us are single-earners in our families. As you all have been informed before, we have already had to take a pay cut since the past few months as the school is going through a difficult financial situation. But in the wake of the new order issued by the Honourable High Court, if you are to press for further concessions on tuition fees, then our salaries might be reduced even more and some of us may not be able to survive any further pay cut. Such reductions in our pay will create extremely distressing conditions that might end up affecting our teaching which is the last thing that we wish for. So, it is our humble request to all the guardians to not request for further concessions.
We solicit your cooperation in this regard. Together we will overcome this crisis.
We are all looking forward to resuming our classes from Monday, 2 November and we do hope and pray that we come back to normalcy soon when in-person classes can resume.
Till then, take care.
Stay Home, Stay Safe!
Warm Regards,
Teachers at The Cambridge School
